49ers' draft capsules: A look at Day 3 selections

May 02, 2023

A look at who the 49ers drafted Saturday on Day 3 of the NFL Draft:

They made three selections Friday.

Round 5, No. 155: Darrell Luter Jr.

Position: Cornerback

School: South Alabama

HT/WT: 6-0, 189

Comment: Played in 34 games with 23 starts at South Alabama with five interceptions, 23 passes defensed and one forced fumble. Not recruited heavily out of Oak Grove High in Hattiesburg, Miss., Luter started at Pearl River Community College and was received several scholarship offers. Good length and speed and played a lot of man-to-man coverage in college. After 2021 season, Pro Football Focus called Luter "the most underrated player in college football."

Luter says: "Honestly I’m very versatile. I play both nickel and outside corner. Of course, I have had the majority of my career outside, but have be in reintroduced inside. I will help out the team in any way I can."

Assistant GM Adam Peters says: "He was the most mature guy we met. He's a man already."

Round 5, No. 173: Robert Beal Jr.

Position: Edge

School: Georgia

HT/WT: 6-4, 247

Comment: Four-star recruit from Duluth Ga., who had his choice of most any college but stayed in his home state and started just 10 times in 59 games over five seasons, taking advantage of the pandemic rules to return in 2022. Ran a 4.4 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine and physical gifts exceeded his performance. Best season was national championship year in 2021 when he had 6 1/2 sacks. Goes by "RJ" and earned the nickname "Tank" as a youth because he had a big head compared to his small frame.

Beal says: "I’m excited to work with (D-line coach Kris Kocurek). I don't know too much about what he does but I know he's got Nick Bosa and he's a dog. He's going to take me to the next level."

GM John Lynch says: "You rely a lot on relationships and (Georgia coach) Kirby Smart has been good to us. Kirby said someone is going to get a really gifted and talented player if they just let this guy hunt QBs and set edges."

Round 6, No. 216: Dee Winters

Position: Linebacker

School: TCU

HT/WT: 5-11, 227

Comment: Played in 48 games with 36 starts for TCU and has the sideline-to-sideline speed the 49ers look for, as evidenced by starters Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw. At 5-11, 227 pounds, has issues at times disengaging in traffic but can excel in open spaces running down ballcarriers and receivers. Special teams will be his ticket to making the roster. Was named defensive most valuable player with seven tackles, three for losses and an interception which was returned 29 yards for a touchdown in semifinal win over Michigan.

Winters says: "I’ve been watching Fred Warner for two years now since I made the transition from safety to linebacker, trying to find someone my game models. He's someone I look up to and hope to follow in his footsteps."

GM John Lynch says: "Our linebackers coach, Johnny Holland, was a huge Dee Winters fan. We trust Johnny's eye a lot. The scouts liked him a lot."

Round 7, No. 247: Brayden Willis

Position: Tight end

School: Oklahoma

HT/WT: 6-3, 241

Comment: Caught 34 passes for 514 yards and a team-high seven touchdowns for the Sooners. Played H-back in an up-tempo, RPO scheme and was a willing and enthusiastic blocker. His experience at shifting and playing in different alignment is appealing to the 49ers. Good athlete. As a senior captain in high school, played quarterback and passed for 521 yards and rushed for 572.

Willis says: At Oklahoma we watch a lot of George Kittle. A willing blocker, a great pass catcher, a a guy that can do it all. We view him as a chess piece, and that's how I view myself as well. I can't think of a greater mentor for me than George Kittle."

GM John Lynch says: "Everyone always says this, but we had him ranked with a fifth-round grade and so when he was still around it made a lot of sense."

Round 7, No. 253: Ronnie Bell

Position: Wide receiver

School: Michigan

HT/WT: 6-0, 191

Comment: Came off an ACL tear in 2021 with an impressive final season, catching 62 passes for 889 yards and four touchdowns. Played both inside and outside in coach Jim Harbaugh's pro style spread offense. Struggles to get separation on his own and will need to be helped by scheme. Leader who served as team captain.

Bell says: I feel like my whole life I’ve had hard coaching. That something I’m excited about and I’m used to. Once I get my hands on a playbook and put things together Im excited for the whole process."

Coach Kyle Shanahan says: "We like how consistent of a football player he is. Special teams player, good returner. Did everything they asked. There was not one thing he struggled with."

Round 7, No. 255: Jalen Graham

Position: Linebacker

School: Purdue

HT/WT: 6-2, 220

Comment: Played in 38 games with 35 starts for the Boilermakers. Lacks size and also speed with a 4.64 40-yard dash time. Energetic and a hard worker. Has position versatility and could become a core special teams player as he develops. Opted out of bowl game to prepare for draft and played in East-West Shrine Game.

GM John Lynch says: "We drafted Jalen Graham when we already had a linebacker because we were kind of turn. Dee Winters or Jalen Graham? Ultimately Dee Winters won out. So when he's still there at the end you go get Jalen Graham."
